Cub Camp 2024-Girls Wrestling
Madera Community College recently celebrated a milestone with its inaugural Summer Cub Camp, focusing on girls wrestling, a sport that's rapidly growing in California. This four-day camp saw enthusiastic participation from young wrestlers across the Madera Unified School District. The camp was led by Madera's own Madison Avila and Christine Jaen, who served as the camp clinicians. Madison and Christine shared their knowledge and experiences as intercollegiate women’s wrestlers to teach campers new wrestling skills and techniques. The faculty, staff, and administration of Madera Community College were honored to have these young women serve as clinicians and role models for the young girls in attendance.
The success of the camp was a result of strong collaboration with Madera Unified School District. Special thanks go to Madera South Athletic Director Andrea Devine and wrestling coaches Al Lopez and Eddie Cortez, both former MCC students. Coach Lopez generously loaned wrestling mats, while Coach Cortez ensured student-athletes had transportation to the camp.
The vision for Cub Camp came from MCC kinesiology students Julio Garcia and Daniela Figueroa. They pitched their idea for the camp while enrolled in an Introduction to Kinesiology course in Spring 2023. They wanted a project which would allow them to apply what they were learning in class to a real-life, hands-on, project. After being given the green-light they immediately began planning, organizing, and fundraising for the event. Their hard work paid off and resulted in the first ever MCC Summer Cub Camp.
